AN ANNUAL show uniting original writing with visual art
Word
Angela M. Carter, creator of show concept/coordinator
In 2014, I decided that I wanted to introduce a show unlike any other: a show for writers. As an arts advocate, I attend many openings; however, I've never seen writing as the main concept. I pitched the idea to Spitzer Art Center, and a date was set up, for 2015, in no time! I approached a local photographer and Spitzer Board member, Danielle Campbell, about the possibility of coordinating the show with this year's past event, and first annual show. She was delighted, and even pitched a great name for the event! There are no words that can describe how proud I am that an idea I had so long ago, grew into such a successful event. I would go as far to say that it didn't feel like an event at all; it felt more like a night with new friends--wordy ones. A writer couldn't ask for anything better than that!
Angela M. Carter is an author, poet, novelist, motivational speaker, spoken word performer, visual artist and advocate. She was born, and raised, in a Virginia farming town. Angela moved abroad, to England, for nearly five years, after receiving a one-month scholarship to study at the University of Bath. She returned to Virginia with a new-found confidence, and voice. Memory Chose a Woman’s Body (unbound CONTENT, 2014) is a poetry memoir, which spotlights the effects of the silences endured after abuse, neglect and depression. Angela is a 2014 Pushcart Prize nominee, nominee for the 2015 Virginia Library Literary Award (poetry), and has been featured in a multitude of venues, including The KGB Club in Manhattan and Busboys and Poets. Her publications include Silver Birch Press, Deep Water Literary Journal, Whurk, Vox Poetica, Premiere Generation Ink, City Lit Rag, The Word Ocean, Worst Week Ever, Our Stories Untold, Gutsy Living, and several anthology publications. She is an advocate of the healing ability of the arts. Angela M. Carter is the Art Director at The Artful Dodger, in Harrisonburg, VA, and an organizer of various community-wide events. www.authorangelamcarter.com
